Make your vote as Auckland butchers go head to head in sausage challenge.


Our favourite craft brewery Hallertau are celebrating the perfect union between bangers and beer with the annual Glorious Society of Bangers and Beer, kicking off this year on 1 September.

Each year the brewery challenges six Auckland sausage makers to make a new sausage with a different Hallertau beer.  The six sausages are served on Hallertau’s menu for a week and customers vote for their favourite snarler.

The Tipsy Snarler is the reigning champion created by the Grey Lynn Butcher last year, and made with Freedom Pork, bacon, mustard and Hallertau Maximus IPA.  Its popularity with locals has ensured a permanent place in the butcher’s display counter.

The Grey Lynn Butcher returns to the challenge this year going head to head with:

  1. Westmere Butcher, Westmere
  2. Seaview Meats, Milford
  3. L’Authentique, Newton
  4. Neat Meat, ‘Ponsonby Central’
  5. Kumeu Village Butchery, Kumeu
  6. (Grey Lynn Butcher), Grey Lynn.

Each will create a new beef or pork sausage using one of the following randomly allocated hoppy ingredients: Hallertau Statesman Pale Ale, Copper Tart – Red Ale, Deception – Schwarzbier, Maximus IPA, Stuntman IPA, Double Stout and Granny Smith Cider.

Hallertau chief brewer Steve Plowman says, “The Glorious Society of Bangers and Beer brings together two wonderful mediums. This search will reveal new combinations of flavours and textures and one of these combinations will triumph over the others.
